Today the Church celebrates one of its most extraordinary women — a Doctor of the Church, a mystic, a diplomat, and a Dominican laywoman who never stopped being a daughter in her father's house. Catherine of Siena had no formal education, yet she counseled popes, dictated some of the most penetrating spiritual writing in the Western tradition, and changed the course of Church history. She did all of this not from a convent or a university but from the middle of ordinary life — caring for the sick, serving the poor, and praying in her small room at home. For homeschooling mothers, Catherine is a powerful patron. She proves that sanctity does not require credentials, that a woman formed in prayer and rooted in family can speak with authority the world cannot ignore. Her feast day is a good day to ask: what is God doing in the quiet of our homes that we cannot yet see?
"Be who God meant you to be and you will set the world on fire." — St. Catherine of Siena
